Question
In light of the potential severity resulting from errors made in the healthcare setting, it is important to know what legal and ethical obligations healthcare employees have to the patient, the physician and organization they are working for, and to other colleagues and co-workers.
Based on your readings this week, as well as your general understanding as to how the U.S. healthcare system operates, discuss your anticipated future role/obligations (or current, if applicable) as a non-clinical medical professional in relation to the physician and other clinical healthcare providers?
Explanation / Answer
As a nonclinical professional I need not provide any medical treatment services but my role include providing assistance to the clinical staff in performing their job effectively. Examples may include administration, HR, IT and billing jobs. My future obligations as a nonclinical medical professional would be ensuring a good environment which helps in providing effective patient care. My ethical responsibilities would include ensuring similar treatment to all the patients in nonclinical activities like filling the patient data, billing and applying for claims. I should not neglect any patient based on any factors of diversity. I should try to help the patients in getting a better treatment cost effectively within my job limits. I have the legal and ethical responsibility to avoid any fraudulent activities in the organization and inform the authorities if I notice any. My legal responsibility would include ensuring to follow the federal and state laws while doing my job. It includes protecting the patient data without revealing the same to others without the consent from the patients. I should not discriminate any one including patients or other employees while performing the job and provide equal assistance for all.
