Question

Inventory Management

With effective resource planning, organizations can reduce inventory and service costs, improve efficiencies, and establish methods for continuous improvement. Depending upon the type of resource, there is a different type of planning that must take place. This can include material requirements planning (MRP), capacity requirements planning (CRP), enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), or product lifecycle management (PLM).

Research two specific types of resource planning.

1. Based on your research, explain whether or not you believe ERP and MRP are the only resource planning processes applicable to manufactured processes.

2. Can either ERP or MRP be used for service industries or can they only be used for manufacturing organizations?

Explanation / Answer

Answer:1

Based on our research, we do not believe that ERP and MRP are the only resource planning processes applicable to manufactured processes. There are other processes which are also essential and significant planning processes applicable for the manufacturing of products.

In the organization, ERP and MRP help in carrying out the major planning activities for the production line so that the production planning can be carried out for the manufacturing of the products. But other than ERP and MRP, there are other sub processes which are essential for the manufacturing of the products as below

Human Resource Planning: Though this is a part of the ERP planning, but this needs to be planned in a separate way as this is a major planning element and very critical for the manufacturing of products.

Production Line Planning: The planning need to be carried out for the production line uptime and its availability for the production.

Spares and consumables planning: Spares and consumables are also key significant parts of planning and these needs to be planned along with MRP and ERP planning

Company operations planning: Company operation planning is also essential and needs to be carried out properly.

Supply chain planning: Supply chain planning is also needed in order to ship the products.

Answer 2:

ERP or MRP can be used for service industries also but the usefulness of ERP and MRP in service industry will not be of great impact. Hence the cost involved in the ERP and MRP does not justifiable with the service industry. Hence it is not recommended to use the ERP and MRP in the service industry. The ERP and MRP is more suitable for the production process because the production process is a structured process and it operates properly with the structure time schedule. The service industry is not structured requirement. The requirement in the service industry varies significantly and one cannot predict the constant demand for the service industry. The service industry is generally having the seasonal impacts in it.
