Question

Prashad starts his forethought with the following quote fom Tony Kushner's Angels in America. Part Two: Perestroika

If the snake sheds his skin before a new skin is ready, naked he will be in the world, prey to the forces of chaos. Without his skin, he will be dismantled, lose coherence and die, Have you my little serpents a new skin?

Based on an understanding of the forethought, explain what Prashad means by the skin? What is Prashad's argument? What are Prashad's claims? Explore the politics of the skin? How will you respond to Prashad's claims? Explain the significance of Prashad's argument to understanding and engaging with contemporary America?

Explanation / Answer

In the forethought of the book “Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting”, the author Vijay Prashad mentions about snakes skin. As per my understanding here Prashad is taking about the race, culture and organization of society. During the days he entered America the scenario was different. People coming from other countries had to fight for justice. In his argument he mentions that some of the people do not believed that the struggle is shared one. Instead they felt that everyone should take care of their own without worrying about others. Some believed that they should earn as much as possible, and take care of their families instead of uniting and fighting for their social justice. He claims that despite of these problems people across the world still go to America for work. He mentions that immigrants seek vertical assimilation to climb darkness to bright whiteness. Talking about the politics of the skin, he beliefs that it is based on poly-cultural concept rather than diversity. Response to Prashad’s claim: I totally agree with his claims and arguments regarding racism, cultural diversity. However, I disagree on just one point that people across the world go to America for seeking vertical assimilation. The significance of Prashad's argument: His book is really helpful for those who wants to migrate to America i.e. who are in search of “new skin”.
