There are the three approaches to the choosing a vendor for analytics.
Get analytics as a service and get it customized
Choose a ready-made platform
Build your own analytics
As a small supplier, building own analytics platform can not be economically viable. Getting an analytics tool from one of reputed vendors can also be a tad too expensive. Advantage is that there are organizations such as SAP, Oracle, JDA & others who have specialized analytics solutions for supply chain management. However, they are likely to be expensive. Last option is to choose a ready-made platform that is universal & use it for analysis. We need to consider this option.
A ready-made analytics platform can be specialized / generic. For our flexibility we should choose a generic platform that should be able to collect data, monitor processes & perform required analysis on a continuous basis. four options I would recommend are:
Sumo Logic
Splunk
New Relic
App Dynamics
These are all computerized analytics software. assumption here is that all supply records are likely computerized. Naturally, one of these software could help in analytics & improving overall operation
Splunk is well known for its log collection. Every application ideally collects log on various performance & Splunk may read these logs & provide important insights about business. Splunk’s drawback is that it may be expensive depending on use.
Sumo logic too works as Splunk but is a cloud based software. This means, you do not need to use additional infrastructure & may directly begin using Sumo Logic from internet by paying subscription charges. Sumo Logic is extremely affordable but not many people can be comfortable with their business data moving to cloud.
App dynamics is an application focused analytics tool. challenged with App dynamics is that their code needs to be tightly integrated with applications that you use. This means, if you want to analyze billing behavior then App dynamics must be integrated with billing software. This requires certain technology knowhow & can be a bit tedious to implement. benefit of this software is that it is comparatively less intrusive as it works with application rather than raw data.
New Relic is a big data analytics platform. This means it may collect data from anywhere & analyze them together. Implementation can be a tricky story but once setup, platform will be able to collect data from various different operations & analyze them to provide critical insights. When it comes pricing it is based on usage of customer.
Given different options, I would recommend New Relic. This is because, it will provide a scalable solution for entire business. However, it is important to have analytics KPI metrics ready before we make final decision.
