Question

Data centers are increasingly being examined for total energy use. Data center experts are often asked, what could be done to operate the center with enough current to support maximum compute power, but while using the minimal electricity possible. This seems like an impossible ask... maximum speed and capacity for the lowest electric bill possible... can it be done? Assume you have been asked by an organizational leader to address this issue. How would you respond to this challenge? Is this possible? If so, how?

Explanation / Answer

Answers)

Data centers consume a lot of energy and thus pinches with the electricity bill that is to be paid by the business. Many a times the electricity makes the data centers too expensive to use. Thus Data centers are increasingly being examined for total energy use. To operate the center with enough current to support maximum compute power, we have to optimize the datacenter power used and the performance of the datacenter to balance that and achieve maximum speed and capacity for the lowest electric bill possible. This can be possible by the following steps and processes:

a) Consolidate many application into fewer servers and many servers into a single datacenter such that electricity consumption reduces and also servers and space utilization increases.

b) The cooling system should be done effectively for the servers in the datacenter to maintain a point where the electricity required for operating the datacenter would be minimal. Incorrect cooling system can lead to more expenses in electricity.

c) Humidity and temperature controls have to be set correctly and appropriately for the numbers of servers in the data center.

d) Turning off the idle or standby equipment or servers when they are not required.

e) Old equipment should be replace by more power efficient newer systems and servers which are less power hungry and run more optimally.
