Question
COLLAPSE
Alaska Sound Family Clinic operates with two physicians, two nurses, one clinic manager and three office assistants. Everyone knows everyone else; everyone is friends with everyone else. The office serves families in rural Alaska, and doctors and nurses treat patients in the clinic or fly to rural sites to provide annual checkups and follow-up care to patients who cannot travel to the clinic. The two physicians have earned MD degrees and both are held in high regard by the communities they serve. Their diplomas are framed and hang on the wall in the clinic waiting room.
The clinic's two nurses - Sarah, hired six years ago, and Christy, hired almost a year ago - had reported on their application forms that they had earned BS degrees in nursing, even though the requirement was that applicants only needed an associate's degree in nursing. Sarah hung her framed diploma on the wall by the receptionist desk. Christy has not brought her diploma in to be displayed. Christy said that she had lost it in the move from Washington state to Alaska just has not gotten around to replacing it.
Next month, Christy will have been employed at the clinic for one year. She is a good nurse; the doctors like her work; the patients like her compassionate manner; all like her pleasant personality. The office assistants have decided that a nice annual recognition for Christy would be to contact Christy's alma mater, purchase a duplicate diploma, frame it, and hang it for all to see. When the clinic manager contacts the university, she is informed that it has no record of Christy having graduated from their BS nursing program. It does, however, have a graduate by that name who received an associate's degree in nursing.
Assume you are the clinic manager. Identify the problem in this case. What action if any should you take? What should you say, if anything, and to whom?
Assume you are Sarah, the other nurse in the clinic. Identify the problem in this case. What should you say, if anything, and to whom?
Assume you are one of the office assistants. Identify the problem in this case. What should you say, if anything, and to whom?
Please read this case study & answer the three attached questions as an initial post in the attached thread. I'd like to also see you respond to your classmates. Enjoy - this is an interesting one!
Explanation / Answer
Answer to the first question:
Being a clinic manager, it will be my responsibility to manage all the staff of the clinic, their schedules, payrolls, problems, interpersonal relations, to address to the patient's problems and his relatives. In this case, the problem is of serious fraud. Christy entered into the service with wrong entry of details in the recruitment application form with entering educational qualification as BS Degree in Nursing. However, it later came to notice that she was having only an associate degree in nursing and the same was the basic requirement for the job. Though she had earned herself a good working reputation among her colleagues and patients alike, there is every possibility that in near future, she could commit same or any kind of fraud, which is highly unacceptable in any kind of profession. Due to her act, she had deprived some another eligible and honest candidate of the job. She must be immediately put on notice to find another job. She may be spared for her behavior and her act may not be reported to police. All her colleagues need to be informed about her act and they may be told not to change their perception about Christy as she was good as an employee and a colleague. They may be told to help her in this case for her migration from this job to another.
Answer to the second question:
It would be a really shock to me if I were Sarah. Working with Christy for about an year and later coming to know that she has committed such kind of fraud for entering into job. But as a good friend and colleague of Christy, I would request the clinic manager not to take any coercive action against her because of her nice reputation and behavior with the employees of the clinic and patients. Further, I would talk with Christy also and like to know the reason for committing such act. I would convince her to not commit such act in future and help her find new job.
Answer to the third question:
This is a case of false declaration and fraud. If I were an office assistant, I would immediately report the matter to the clinic manager but due to Christy's nature and reputation at work, I would also request him not to take any harsh action against her. I would have informed all the employees of the clinic about the misconduct of Christy.
