Question

Scenario 1

This week you will present your course project Website options to the class to solicit feedback before constructing your final design.

Create three complete designs (each as a separate slide in Microsoft PowerPoint) of the home page from the media and options you have gathered and built in the first two weeks of the course. Submit these designs to the Discussion Area as early in the week as possible (you should use this feedback to choose the design you will implement in the Week 3 Project).

Select two of your classmates' work and review their design options. Your review should include constructive criticism based on the color scheme, composition, and font used in the design. Select the best designs and provide your recommendation and overall comments.

Scenario 2

Visual presentation takes high priority in website design. Visual elements can be used to draw attention to specific content, guide the user experience, and identify navigational and other elements of interest on the website pages.

Visit the following websites:

http://www.deankoontz.com

http://aquent.com/

http://jorgehurtado.com/portfolio/

Based on your observations, analyze each website by answering the following questions:

Which page element draws your attention the most? This is the focus of that page; is it appropriate for the page or does it seem misplaced?

Does the website provide a comfortable path through the page elements (such as logo, navigation, and content) or is it difficult to identify the important elements or the purpose of some elements? Why?

How are simple shapes and lines used to emphasize content? Is it a mindful choice or merely decorative?

Does the website conform to expectations related to its overall purpose and the intended audience?

Perform the same analysis on three additional websites of your choice. Which of these websites has the best interface? Justify with specific details.

Question: Which page element draws your attention the most? This is the focus of that page; is it appropriate for the page or does it seem misplaced?

Answer:

The page element that draws my attention the most is: “the books”

As Dean Koontz is an author, so, the focal point of this website the books. So, the images of books are centrally placed in the webpage.

For me, it’s absolutely appropriate for the page and it has a certain block of colour blended in such a way that highlights and draws attention toward the images of the book.

Question: Does the website provide a comfortable path through the page elements (such as logo, navigation, and content) or is it difficult to identify the important elements or the purpose of some elements? Why?

Answer:

The website is well organised, well-structured one. Navigation is very simple in this particular website. As we know, Web users are impatient and insist on instant gratification. So, if a web-site isn’t able to meet users’ expectations, then designer failed to get his job done properly and the company loses money. The higher is the cognitive load and the less intuitive is the navigation, the more willing are users to leave the web-site and search for alternatives. But in the case of www.deankonntz.com, we can say that, it provides a very simple path for navigation across the website.

Question: How are simple shapes and lines used to emphasize content? Is it a mindful choice or merely decorative?

Answer:

In this particular website, I didn’t find simple shapes are there for decoration or to emphasize content. Though there are simple lines to differentiate heading and content in “Current News” section, but due to the colour of line, it’s not an eye catching component. For me, it could have been better if the colour selection was different that the present one.

Question: Does the website conform to expectations related to its overall purpose and the intended audience?

Answer:

Absolutely, yes. The website conform to expectations related to its overall purpose and intended audience. The website is a balanced one. Balance is a pretty important thing in many regards. The website has a symmetrical balance in its design. The elements used in the website design are complementing each other pretty well. The colours are also looking pretty good for the website.
