Question

Developing Employees is the fourth component of a comprehensive performance management plan.

For employees to improve and sustain performance and to grow their skills and abilities, they need several different types of opportunities. These opportunities can include different types of training and developmental assignments. This part of the performance management plan would determine the types and frequency of activities to develop employees to address performance needs, improve performance, and develop new skills. You need to decide how often you will meet with employees to discuss their development plans. You will also need to look at the best methods for developing skills and abilities. Sometimes that will be training, but you need to be open to a variety of developmental opportunities such as special projects and assignments. Even outside activities that employees may do on their own can lead to developing new skills and abilities.

How does this part of the Performance Management Process operate within your workplace or an organization that you are familiar with?

Explanation / Answer

Training and development of the employees is the foremost Performance Management Process in the organisation in which I work. In order to improve the skillsets and abilities of the employees, the organisation identifies and conducts specific trainings required by the employees based on their job profile and feedback provided. These trainings are conducted by Subject Matter Experts (SME) who are experienced professionals. These trainings are conducted over a period of time which gives sufficient time to the employees to absorb the learnings and tests are conducted at the end of such workshops so that the learnings are retained by the employees. Also online courses are available to the employees and they can complete the courses at their own will in order to learn anything they wish to, be it soft skill courses or technical aspects.
