Question

Jean-Louis has recently been promoted to supervisor of his group. He got along well with everyone in the group and had a few close friends in the group, including Cameron. Six months into Jean-Louis’s tenure as supervisor, Cameron told him that Genevieve had started complaining that Jean-Louis was playing favourites and giving the best and most interesting assignments to his friends, leaving her and the other “outsiders” with the routine jobs that would not help them become more promotable. Genevieve apparently was threatening to go to Jean-Louis’s boss to complain about his unfair and arbitrary project assignments.

What should Jean-Louis do? (Please choose your preferred solution and briefly explain from a leadership standpoint)

1.Ask Cameron to keep an eye on the situation and report to him about anything Genevieve says about his management style.

2.Speak to Genevieve directly, tell her what Cameron said, and ask her to explain herself.

3.Call a meeting of the entire group and ask for feedback on his management style, then, work to improve his relationships with all of his employees.

4.Make sure that Genevieve gets her choice of assignments when the next set of projects opens up.

5.Pre-empt any complaint by Genevieve by going to his supervisor now, explaining the situation, and asking for advice on how to handle it.

Explanation / Answer

According to me Jean-Louis must do -

3) Call a meeting of the entire group and ask for feedback on his management style, then, work to improve his relationships with all of his employees.

At first it seems that speaking to Genevieve directly can help in the situation, but it would not help Jean-Louis by communicating with her because she can create a mess in the workplace. As she feels that Jean-Louis is doing favouritism to his friends, Jean can call a meeting with his entire team and ask questions regarding his way of managing the team and giving feedback on the style, as it would be much better to openly talk with the team members than speaking with Genevieve. This way Jean can get many opinions from the team and thus can rectify himself if he has done any mistake. And eventually he would give the work to all the team members equally. Also as Jean has already a good relationship with the team members so it would not be difficult for him to change is management style so that there would not be any discrimination in the workplace as it would hurt the reputation of the organization.

Hope this helps :)
