Question
Protecting Your Data from Data Breaches
How should customers be informed of the breach (e-mail, snail mail, phone call)? What reassurances should the company provide? If information is exposed that might lead to identity theft, should the company be responsible for compensating affected customers? Should the company be required to provide credit report monitoring to affected customers to help detect potential identity theft? For what period of time should the company accept responsibility for any identity theft that occurs?
Explanation / Answer
Customers should be informed via e-mail and if it is very critical then they should be alerted via phone call. The company should explain to the customers about the prevention and secure methods that the company is going to take against the breach and what might be the result, as well as they must inform the customers about what they had to do immediately like blocking of cards, changing the PIN numbers etc...
The company which makes the customers affected must compensate the customers if anything happens because it is clearly the company mistake that not having strong security for sensitive data. Also, the company should provide the credit report monitoring to the customers to identify the suspicious activity on their accounts. In my view this should be definitely for the long period like more than a year and also company should bare the damage at any cost.
