This assignment is an original term paper, which will demonstrate a significant research effort blended with knowledge of Information Systems.

Review the following: Your topic will be centered on how Information Systems are used in the careers of your field of study (your major). (For instance: A Criminal Justice major may choose to write about how databases are used extensively to track and locate criminals).

Format: There is not a set length requirement on this paper, although it is safe to say that the paper should demonstrate sufficient effort, formatting and communication that one would expect of college juniors and seniors. In short, I am looking for papers that exhibit understanding, considerable effort and convey pride of effort by the author.

Explanation / Answer

I work in the retail industry which is where I would demonstrate the use of information systems. Being a part of Walmart, the biggest retailer in the industry, I can say that information system plays one of the most important roles in how Walmart works and why it is so successful.

walmart's strategy depends on the data they generate from the customer’s purchases, trends and habit/history. This is where information system comes in, this huge amount of data (also called BIG DATA) is so large that analyzing all the data through human level of analysis would take such a considerable amount of time which would not be beneficial to the customers of the company, Walmart collects data from their point to point sales, online sales as well as what the customers purchase the most. All these values are then categorized based on the demographics of the customer, their age, sex, preference as well as their purchase habits which are then analyzed by the system for patterns which could be virtually indistinguishable to the human eyes. There is a need to be able to store this data for processing as well as create a form of forecasting structure where all the past trends correlate with the current shopping trends to essentially predicted the future trends.

Walmart then essentially optimizes their inventory using information technology again, they utilize the forecast in a model where they can implement JIT inventory management system. These systems allow the company to be able to essentially optimize their inventory, holding cost, storage cost, logistics cost as well as allow them to order the inventory just in time before the stocks need to be replenished.

Walmart successfully uses information system in their day to day services which have enabled them to create a marketplace which can offer the lowest price essentially allowing them an optimized expenditure as far as assets and inventory goes and allow the company to be able to create profits which would not have been possible has traditional systems been used.
