Question
This week’s discussion involves you and another person of your choosing. Have a genuine conversation with them; preferably in person. Pay attention to the body language both of you use. What about distractions? Did you really understand their problem or situation? This list is endless, but I can assure you that communication is one of the weakest links we humans have in a technology-driven era.
Also, you can “let your hair down” this exercise and convey your observations without fear that I’ll be on your case for writing errors. Say it like it is, or was. Obviously, redact names and other identifying information if you feel it is necessary.
Explanation / Answer
For the given exercise, my friend Bob and I conducted pseudo interview session where Bob acted as the interviewer and I was being interviewed by him.
Questions asked by the interviewer:
Interviewee’s Reaction
How do you feel you handled the interview?
The interview went well. The interviewer was quite friendly and made me comfortable. She asked various questions about my life. The interview was more like a discussion and went quite smoothly.
Were you able to provide the information you wanted to provide?
Yes, as I was prepared about answering these kind of questions, so the answer pointers were in my mind and I was able to express them well.
Did you ask appropriate questions?
I asked about the role, which we would be offered, post joining the company. I also asked about the employee development initiatives taken by the company. The interviewer was quite impressed with my questions and she answered them in brief.
Were your responses to the interviewer’s questions appropriate and complete?
Yes, as it seemed more like a discussion than an interview and also because I was quite prepared with the answers, I was able to express and articulate clearly.
Interviewer’s Reaction
How did the interview go?
The interview went quite well. The interviewee was able to handle all the questions quite effectively. The interview was more of a discussion as we were discussing various aspects of his life.
What did the body language of the interviewee reflect?
The interviewee was quite confident and the same was reflected in the way, he was conducting himself. We had 2 firm handshakes, which oozed out of his confidence. The eye contact was maintained through the interview and there were positive vibes in the room, which confirmed his confident persona.
If it was a real interview, what would have been your final verdict?
I would have definitely selected the interviewee as he could prove an asset for the company. If it was in my hands, I would have discussed the job profile as well as the compensation structure with him and would have tried my best to hire him.
