Question

“The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionable integrity. Without it, no real success is possible.” ~~ Dwight Eisenhower (1890-1969)

Think back to different leaders you have observed or worked with. You can learn from great leaders who may have been mentors to you, and you can also learn from poor leaders what NOT to do. Integrity is a key quality in leadership and a leader’s ethics will be evident in her actions. An effective leader creates an organizational culture that reflects her values for the firm which impacts all stakeholders including staff and customers. This lesson will examine these topic areas further to understand moral and effective leadership.

Ethics considers morality in determining standards of right and wrong. Ethics comprise our moral beliefs and conduct. Ethics can relate to rights, such as an ethical committee in a healthcare institution that weighs right to life or other treatment issues in a situation to make sure the course of action is considered proper. Ethical decisions usually reflect a person’s morality and values. Ethics, like values, can vary from person to person. What one person may considers ethical behavior might not be ethical to someone else. Some ethical decisions can be more cut and dry where others might be in a grey area.

Ethical conduct can have consequences and legal implications. Watching the People’s Court on television one evening will give you a sampling of misinterpretation of ethics by the various parties involved. In a healthcare setting, there can be malpractice and other lawsuits that occur in considering the integrity of medical practice and the hospital’s role in the outcome results.

Ethical standards can be developed and training can be beneficial. For example, a leader can institute training to generate an ethical culture for the institution. A healthcare leader would want to meet the policy position covered by ACHE as he is ultimately responsible for the ethical standards of a healthcare institution. Many business firms even institute a code of ethics for staff to adhere to so there is consistency in what is considered right and wrong.

The article on Leadership Values and Ethics addresses 43 examples of leadership values that tie into ethics and your behavior as a leader. As you review Choose Your Leadership Values, determine what your top five values would be.
Organizational politics is another component of ethics and honesty along with your individual values. Your ethics can impact how you treat others in the organization and actions you might take to further your career which is part of organizational politics. Think back to when you heard someone say another person ‘kisses up to the boss’. Your personal values and ethics impact the role you might play in organizational politics. You need to be comfortable with your choices. The Daily MBA site addresses organizational hierarchy and covers the players including one called the ‘parrot’; perhaps you worked with a boss who was a ‘parrot’ that took your ideas and work and passed it off as theirs to get the credit without recognizing your efforts and contributions. Such situations can cause unrest and discontent and result in lack of trust and respect for the leader. The article also covers rules to be aware of which are important to know. If you are striving for a leader position you may find an existing leader that is helpful as a mentor to understand organizational politics. Methods in dealing with organizational politics in The Daily MBA article also address being data driven. If you stick to the facts it can take emotions out of the element. Big data is a trend in driving decisions at firms.
Power can get some people in trouble as they believe they are untouchable. A Forbes article provides eight rules to avoid misuse of power in an organization. Conflict of interest is also something to consider. For example, in the state of California the county recorder keeps originals of annual Conflict of Interest forms for public officials. A district healthcare institution would have to file these for their public board members and key officials who have a position of interest that are involved in decision making (such as a chief executive officer, financial officer, purchasing agent). Such individuals have to declare if they accepted any gifts from anyone or had any property or stock that might be influential in purchases. As an illustration, if a person in authority owned stock in Dell computers and the entity decided to buy new computers that were the Dell brand this individual would have to communicate there was a potential conflict of interest and remove themselves from any of the decision process because it could be an area that could personally benefit them.

An organizational politics questionnaire is a helpful tool in examining how you rate in organizational politics. Each individual will have different values and thoughts on what is acceptable or not to them. The Management Study Guide covers traits for ethical leaders that include: dignity and respectfulness, serving others, justice, community building, and honesty. See a trend? These are characteristics that can be traits and/or values that you realize from previous information on leadership behaviors and perhaps some particular leadership styles.

I used to be recently talking with a buddy of mine move, who steered as a CEO or other business leader it's significantly better to be believed than admired. He argued that there are some distance too many business leaders who pick the later. I don't want to put phrases in s mouth, but I believe he'd agree with President Eisenhower.

At least according to this learn, it could appear that those guys maintain the secret to rising to the highest, whilst ethical guys undergo a drawback within the workplace. It appears, as a minimum for guys, that mendacity to workers, crew members, and customers seems to be the best way for male specialists to get ahead. I will't aid however surprise why it seems to be unique for women.

I guess I'm naïve. I have liked these individuals i have worked with that I could believe and felt were folks of integrity. Whats extra, many of the bad leaders I've needed to work with over time were not sincere they quite often lied to colleagues, co-staff, and customers. They did some thing it took to close the deal, end the dialogue, or develop their strategies.

It's no secret that a part of what introduced the sector economic climate to its knees is this style of habits. science (seventy seven percent)
automotive (sixty nine percentage)
food and beverage (sixty six percentage)
consumer packaged items (65 percentage)
Telecommunications (62 percentage)
Brewing and spirits (sixty two percent)
power (fifty nine percent)

prescription drugs (fifty eight percentage)
