Some companies may hold patents for Wi-fi standards e.g. Companies like Vectis hold Wi-Fi patent portfolio for core patents covering WIFI Standard and its amendments. So adopting a wi-fi standard and suing requires getting a permission from Vectis and paying royalty to them

Trade secrets

Help to protect information that offers a company in competitive advantage e.g. financial information, commercial information, technical and scientific information

A specific Wi-fi technology can only be used by the company that owns it and by those who have been licensed to use, by the owner as per law

Trade marks

Help to identify and distinguish the goods of one company from those of others. This includes name , symbols logos used in the wi-fi modem. Only the owner has exclusive right to use them

Advertising

Use of a trademark protected elements have to be carefully considered e.g. Slogans like,’ fastest Wi-Fi’

Use of copyrighted materials; like photos/ music in ads. Copyright protects original creative works like books, music etc. It offers the authors rights to control the reproduction of the work.

Packaging design could have been protected under Intellectual property rights
