Question
A couple of researchers want to estimate the sizes of two populations of Anolis lizards on two different islands. They do this making two trips to each island. On the first trip to island A 20 lizards are captured and marked, and on the second trip 25 lizards are captured, of which 4 are marked. On the first trip to island B, 35 lizards are captured and marked, and on the second trip 33 are captured, of which 12 are marked. Estimate the population sizes for the these two islands. Round to the nearest whole number.
Explanation / Answer
According to Lincoln Index calculation method:
N= MC/R
where N = total estimate
M = no marked in the first vist
C = no marked in the second visit &
R = no recaptured in the second visit
Acco to this
On one Island the ratio becomes
N1=(20X25)/4= 125
N2=(35X33)/12 = 96
Therefore, estimated total population of lizards is N1+N2 = 221
There is a chapman method which is unbiased unlike Lincoln Index i.e. N = frac{(M+1)(C+1)}/{R+1} - 1
There are many variations in this method available now a days depending upon the complexity included e.g. calculation of male, female and other characteristics which gives a poison distribution
