In part (a) both exert same force on each other no matter what may be their size as per the newton's third law but the accelaration of the objects not only depends upon the force but also on mass so as in part (b) force exerting on each other will remain same till the contact exists and no other forces comes into picture but their accelerations will be force/their mass
