Question

Technology S-Curve

1) What is the "Technology S-Curve"?

Give an example of a technology whose technological improvement conform to this type of curve. Also, give an example of a technological improvement that you think has NOT conformed to this curve, and carefully explain why we did not see the expected conformity to the S-curve.

2) Your text argues for two distinct types of S-curves- one for technological improvement, and one for technological diffusion. What is the difference between these curves? Give at least two examples of each, and explain why these examples are appropriate (don't use the same example that you used in question 1, or the examples that are given in the text).

Explanation / Answer

ANSWER-

TECHNOLOGY S-CURVE-

1a-Technology S-curve is the graphical representation of the product's invention to its innovation over a period of life cycle.all the research & expenses involved in any product can be judged by this s-curve & decisions can be made is any improvement is needed in the product.if there is not any more improvement needed at the end(technology maturity) then it converts into the shape of "s". as it is the technology based s-curve then it shows the direction of improvement in any technology from its beginnng to its end.

the two factors represented on the axis of the graphs are- time(x-axis) & performance(y-axis).

as the time moves forward then performance of the tecnology moves & forms the shape of "S".

FOR EXAMPLE-

1(b)lets take the example of COMPUTER. when computer was invented by charles babbage the size of that computer was equal to a room size but as the time goes forwrad innovations were made & improvements were done in the technology & reduce the size of the computer with the help of vaccum tubes, transistors,ICs & silicon chips & now computer becomes compact & can be carry in a bag.so, this technology improvement is the example which conform the rules of s-curve.

1(c)lets take the example of the product which does not conform the rules of technology s-curve mechanical watches are some of the invention of mecahnical technolgy where people can see the internal mechanism of the watch's working & they were heavy & thick sized after some time they get innovation but at the end the possibility for the improvement in them is considered impossible to invest.

1(d)- why we did not see the expected conformity to the S-curve- we did not see the expected conformity in the s-curve as the technology reaches at its peak & we always think that this is it. technology can not go beyond this. there is nothing to be improved but as we move forward & findout that this technology is not able to do this thing then we comes to know that it is not finished yet it needs further improvement.which can be possible in theory but may be impossible in practice.

2(a) DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TECHNOLOGY IMPROVEMENT & TECHNOLOGY DIFFUSION S- CURVE-

There is no big big difference between the two. the only difference between these is that in technology improvement s-curve the product can be improved technically but in technology diffusion curve the technology is spread among other products for thier improvement & innovation.

2(b)- two examples of each s- curve-

for technological improvement s-curve- calculator is one of the example & television is another example.

for technological diffusion- silicon chips which helps to reduce the thickness of the devices is one example & bike engines are another examples.

2(c)- these examples are appropriate beacuse these example shows the improvement of technology in calculator devieces & compactness of TV to ultra slim LEDs.

from technology diffusion point of view, chips helped other devices to be improved like moblie phones, laptops etc & engines helps to improve the fuel efficiency & speed of the bike.
