Question

Part A: Estimate the radiation pressure due to a bulb that emits 25

W of EM radiation at a distance of 8.0cm from the center of the bulb. Assume that light is completely absorbed.

P = 1.0 x 10^-6 N/m^2

Part B: Estimate the force exerted on a fingertip at this point. Suppose that the area of the fingertip is 1.4

cm2 . Assume that light is completely absorbed.

Express answer to two sig figs and include appropriate units

F=

I got the answer to part A correct, but I can't for the life of me figure out part B. It keeps saying "Incorrect". Help wouldl be appreciated.

Explanation / Answer

As you said you got answer to part A correct,then

P = 1 * 10^-6 N/m^2

Area of fingertip = 1.4 cm^2

Convert it to m^2

Area = 1.4*10^-4 m^2

Force = Pressure*Area = 10^-6 * 1.4 * 10^-4

= 1.4*10^-10 N
