Question
Old City Photographics (OCP) specializes in processing traditional 35 mm film negatives. OCP offers three packages to its customers. With the standard package, the customer gets a set of 6”x4” prints. The deluxe package adds to the standard package a CD-ROM of high resolution scans of the pictures. Finally, the pro package is similar to the deluxe package in that it comes with a CD-ROM, except that the customer gets a contact print rather than a set of prints. On average, OCP receives 15 jobs per hour consisting of 50 percent standard, 30 percent deluxe, and 20 percent pro.
All jobs require 2 min per unit to process the film at the processing station. Making the 6”x4” prints takes 4 min per unit at the print station. Scanning the film on to a CD-ROM takes 5 min per unit at the scanning station. Making the contact print takes 10 min per unit at the contact print station.
Questions:
A. How many jobs will arrive per hour at each station?
B. Determine the bottleneck and flow rate.
Explanation / Answer
Answer to question # a :
Hourly arrival rate of jobs at station for standard print = 50 percent of 15 = 7.5
Hourly arrival rate of jobs at station for deluxe print = 30 percent of 15 = 4.5
Hourly arrival rate of jobs at station for pro package = 20 percent of 15 = 3
Answer to question b :
Following are the unit times per job at respective stations :
Processing of film at processing station = 2 minute
Making 6 inch x 4 inch film at print station = 4 minute
Scanning the film on a CD – ROM = 5 minute
Making contact print = 10 minutes
Since “Making contact print” has maximum processing time per unit , it is the Bottleneck activity.
Flow rate is determined by bottleneck activity .
