Question

What are the behaviors that seem to bother Eileen?

What assumptions - explicit and implicit - do you think Eileen is operating under in this situation?

Of the assumptions that you have identified, which ones could Eileen check by simple research and inquiry? How could she do this?

What judgments and attributions is Eileen making?

What are some possible explanations for how Geoffrey sees this situation?

What feedback would you recommend Eileen give Geoffrey?

Give an alternative interpretation of this scenario that offers a version of what's happening that is consistent with the events described, but that you think Eileen would disagree with?

Explanation / Answer

1. What are the behaviors that seem to bother Eileen?

Eileen is bothered by Geoffrey’s lack of interest in the interpersonal relations workshop. During Eileen’s presentation, Geoffrey lounges on his seat and seems bored with what is being taught in the workshop. Besides, he does not contribute to the discussions in the workshop. Eileen perceives Geoffrey as being hostile and arrogant, which she interprets as being some of the primary reasons as to why Geoffrey cannot keep his team together for more than three months at a time.

2. What assumptions –explicit and implicit – do you think Eileen is operating under this situation? Include as many as you think of.

Eileen assumes:

3. Of the assumptions, you’ve identified, which ones could Eileen check by pure research and inquiry? How could she do this?

Eileen may use simple research and inquiry to determine whether she Geoffrey's behavior is a deliberate attempt to disrespect her, whether all participants of the workshop know tnhe relevance of the training, and whether she has created an environment that encourages participation. She may ask the participants of the workshop to detail how they feel about the workshop anonymously. Eileen may also talk to Geoffrey and explain to him how she feels about his behavior and also inquire his perceptions on the training. Eileen may also ask Geoffrey's superiors the reasons as to why his teams are existent for only a short period. Finally, Eileen should ask the former members of Geoffrey's team why they left the team and their feelings on the time they spent on the team.

4. What judgments and attributions are Eileen making?

Eileen is using prior beliefs on how participants of a workshop should behave to conclude that Geoffrey is rude and disrespectful (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2017). She assumes that new participants of a workshop should behave in a particular manner. As highlighted by Buchbinder and Shanks (2017), oversimplification of Geoffrey's behavior may also be one of the reasons as to why she thinks he is rude and disrespectful. Eileen ignores her role in behavior exhibited by Geoffrey in the workshop.

5. What are some possible explanations for how Geoffrey sees this situation?

Geoffrey may be disinterested in training as what is taught is common knowledge to him. She may also not like the way Eileen is teaching. Geoffrey may have been forced to take the training by his superiors. Geoffrey may be experiencing personal problems that may be hindering his participation and concentration in training.

6. What feedback would you recommend Eileen give Geoffrey?

Eileen should sit down with Geoffrey and determine his perceptions on the course. She should also inform him how she interprets his behavior and determines whether her opinion is right or wrong. Finally, Eileen should study the characteristics of the successful members of Geoffrey’s organization to determine whether Geoffrey’s behavior would contribute towards his organizational success or failure.

7. Give an alternative interpretation of this scenario that offers a vision of what’s happening that is consistent with the events described, but that you think Eileen would disagree with.
