Casual dress in professional offices has been coming under attack. Your boss, Elizabeth Sommer, received the e-mail shown in Figure 5.1. She thinks it would be a good assignment for her group of management trainees to help her respond to that message. She asks your team to research answers to the first five questions in President Aiden Rebol's message. She doesn't expect you to answer the final question, but any information you can supply to the first would help her shape a response. Diago Enterprises, LLC, is a public CPA firm with a staff of 90 CPAs, bookkeepers, managers, and support personnel. Located in Cypress, California, the plush offices on Valley View Boulevard overlook Oak Knoll Park. The firm performs general accounting and audit services as well as tax planning and preparation. Accountants visit clients in the field and also entertain them in the downtown office. Your Task. Acceptance Wear for Women on Casual Dress Day : Wearing a casual dress on casual dress day makes employees feel relax and enjoy their work. Generally, a casual dress provides comfort to people and increase their efficiency level. So there should be a grant for the wearing of the casual dress for women on casual dress day. It may be skirts and tops, cotton trousers and shirts or any type of customized dresses that fulfills the purpose of the organization are allowed to wear. The length of skirts should be below the knee and the tops should be loose to provide an executive look to the employees.
Acceptance Wear for Men on Casual Dress Day: Like women, men should wear an acceptable casual dress on casual dress day. They should wear a cotton trouser, shirt, t-shirt or any type of customized dress that are granted by the company. As we know casual dresses make us feel comfort and enables us to work for a longer period of time, so a particular casual dress should be accepted for men.
Restrictions on Body Art and Piercing: There should be restrictions on body art and piercing in a workplace. Body art and piercing distract employees, they loose their productivity and zeal to work. Some employees go on surfing the web for more attractive designs of body art, some may have a serious discussion on it during office hour which leads to delay in work. There are offensive tattoos which should be restricted in a workplace. Another reason to retrict tattoos or body art is, it is quite unprofessional. It doesn't add any profeesional look to the employees. The employer or the manager should discuss the matter with the employees or team members and make it a rule.
Supervisors Reacting to Inappropriate Clothing: Inappropriate and offensive clothes are not allowed in an work environment. If any employee wears that kind of clothes then supervisors should express their reactions by discussing with the employee personally. Supervisors reactions should be there to maintain discipline in an organization.
Definition of Casual Attire: Casual attire is a western attire which emphasizes on comfort, relaxation, and individuality over formality. In many countries people have business casual attire,like pants and a blazer, or a pencil skirt and a top for women and slacks or chinos and high collared shirt for men.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Dress Code:
Pros:
1. Acts as advertising for the company: Dress code acts as an advertising for the company. When employees go outside people usually notice the company name and have a desire to know about the company and its products. The company logo on the uniform creates a sense of brand awareness among the people. Uniforms provide more exposure and publicity.
2. Identity: Dress code provides the employees an unique identity. It gives a feeling of team spirit and make the employees feel that they are part of the company.
3. Professional Look: Dress code provides a professional look to all employees. They look smarter and wiser than others who doesn't have a dress code.
Cons
1. Prevents Uniqueness: Dress code prevents uniqueness, it restricts identifying employees from one another. Employees may feel bore by wearing same clothes daily.
2. Poor Efficiency: Employees who can't wear the uniforms in a decent manner infront of clients then it would be a bad reputation for the company. It makes customers to assume that employees don't respect the company ethics.
People may be critical about a casual dress code policy, because it may not suit them or they simply don't like to wear a casual dress in an office environment.
Above all, we can say that different people have different choices and opinions, they should be given respect and consideration.
