Question
A manager is ordering 40 inkjet printers for staff working in the company's main office. Details of the available models are given below. The print quality score has been produced by an independent magazine. The score ranges from 1 = very poor to 5 = excellent. Use the above information to demonstrate how the manager could apply each of the following strategies to choose the computer and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using these strategies. (a) Lexicographic (b) Semi-lexicographic (c) Elimination by aspects (d) Satisficing. (e) dominance.Explanation / Answer
a)Lexicographic : it is done by comparative preferences.. like
let price be -> x
mono printing speed be -> y
print quality -> z
noise level -> t
then...first he will take most priority item among the above...
let say z which is print quality..
then he order all the attributes from highest print quality to least..
if any ties occur...between the attributes then, he select next priority.. let say x - price..
then he order the attributes..(which are equal for print quality...) from low to high..
like...wise he proceeds for all priority...upto... the best one is found..
advantages and disadvantages ..: in this strategy we can get the best item...when have only..one priority.. otherwise...there are many factors..like.. the highest print quality item may have high cost..sometimes this strategy will not consider all the attributes...(means if there is no tie between the privious attributes)
b)semi-lexicographic : it is also similar to the lexicographic
c)Elimination by aspects: in this,first he will select the most important attribute, and then he will set the cutoff criteria for that attribute...lets say.. first is print quality..and he set the criteria as 3 ,, then all the instance which have the print quality less than 3 are eliminated.....now he will select next.second important attirbute...let say price...
like wise he will..put cutoff on every attribute..eventually he will left of the one attribute which is the best one..
adavantages : it is better than the lexicographic...considers..all attribute priorities..
d)Satisficing : in this ,first he will set a satisficing criteria...based on his needs and available resources... then he will start from first one and checks whether it reaches the satisficing criteria , the first one which reaches this criteria is selected...
adv and disadv : faster one. but we may not get the best solution
