Question
What are your top takeaways from the discussion?
When dealing with a customer from another country, it is a good idea to know at least some of their non-verbal cues so you don't get confused or offensive. In the Philippines, they have some non-verbal cues that are a bit different from ours here in the United States, Filipino's will sometimes draw a picture with their fingers of a rectangle or square to ask for a menu or to ask for the check in a restaurant. They also will lip point, pouting out their lips in the direction of where they are pointing to, instead of pointing with their finger. This gesture is very common, so don't get confused and think they are inviting you in for a kiss. Another unique form of non-verbal communication is the sign of respect to an elder. This is generally done by someone younger by taking the hand of an elder and gently tapping it to one's forehead while saying "mano po" or "pagmamano" which means bless hand or hand of respect.
The Filipino culture is not too much different than ours. Their country is more westernized then other Asian countries. They are very resilient people, they take pride in their families, they are very religious, and they love to party. Filipino's have the longest Christmas celebrations, starting as early as August and lasting through the first or second week of January. There are 175 estimated languages spoken in the Philippines. Almost all are classified as Malayo-Polynesian. The Philippines has a very unique culture due to the influences of colonization and the surrounding countries. Filipino people are very hardworking and strive to make their lives and their children's lives better. The melting pot theory that is evident in this culture makes this country a vibrant, exciting, and diverse place to live and visit. I myself have never been, but would like to go there someday to meet some of the family of my best friend, Tina.
