Question

1.An experiment picked 100 high school students from Springfield area. Can you assume that the height of these 100 students be a normal distribution? Why?

2.An experiment surveyed 100 customers and asked opinions on a new product. Could you assume the opinion score a normal distribution, if the customers are all similar in relevant aspects such as demographic, education, and location?

3.What is the difference between Mean and Median in terms of measuring the center of a set of data points? Which one would you use in the following situations and WHY?

(1)Randomly sampled 10,000 US households for the purpose of measuring typical US household income.

(2)Randomly sampled 100 high school students from Springfield area for the purpose of measuring typical high school student height.

(3)To measure the cost of shipping in Missouri, a company randomly sampled 1000 from orders placed in Missouri and recorded the actual shipping time.

4.Explain variance and provide examples showing what information variance can provide in addition to that provided by mean or median?

Explanation / Answer

4-Basically variance is defined as a average of the squared differences from the Mean. Unlike range which only looks at the extremes.Variance gives a measure of how the data distributes itself about the expected value. Or mean, it basi ally looks at all the data points and then determines their distribution.

To calculate the variance follow these steps:

Variance is basically differ from Mean and median as mean and median both describe the location of one sample data.Where as variance measures how far a set of (random) numbers are spread out from their average value.
