Cryptography is the tool that is used for transmitting and storing data in a secret form so that data can be hidden from unauthorized access. It is combination of two words- 'Krypto' that means hidden and 'graphene' means writing. It is an essential information security tool. The benefits are listed below: -
1. Confidentiality: - It provides the confidentiality that authorized user is able to access the data and prevents the communication from unauthorized revelation.
2. Data Integrity: - The hash functions related to cryptography plays a major role in assuring data integrity of users.
3. Non-repudiation: -It guards against the dispute that may arise due to denial of message passing by providing the non-repudiation service.
4. Authentication: - The cryptographic technique such as digital signatures can protect information against forgeries and spoofing.
Drawbacks: -
1. It does not guard against the threats that emerge from poor design of systems and procedures.
2. Addition of cryptography techniques leads to delay and is very costly.
3. Cryptographic technique is based on the computations of mathematical problems. Any breakthrough in solving these mathematical problems may results to cryptographic technique vulnerable.
