For Max Weber, a bureaucratic structure is the "ideal' type of organization. Based on this week's readings (Bateman, Snell, & Konopaske chapters and Mintzberg article) on organization structure, what do you think are the three most important conditions or factors that would lead a manager to depart from the basic functional bureaucracy model in the design/redesign of a whole organization or part of an organization? Be sure to give a rationale for your list.

Explanation / Answer

The three most important conditions or factors that would lead a manager to depart from the basic functional bureaucracy model in the design/redesign of a whole organization or part of an organization to avoid losing good employees due to the standardization or work/machines, top management being too centralized and they are not involved in the day-to-day, and having conflicting goals. Below I will give my rationale for each:

-Losing good employees due to the standardization of work/machines- if work becomes so standard, there would not be much need for employees to be creative and think outside of the box. If machines are being used and work is standardized there would not be a need for as many employees since the machines are doing all of the work. This will cause employees to be out of work.

-Top management being too centralized- top managers want to be centralized, but they are speaking on behalf of middle management and employees that are actually doing the work. This approach, they have control but really do not have the knowledge of the day-to-day they only know what has been reported to them. They would not be able to answer questions if asked in detail about a process as they are not involved, they will more than likely have to table the idea for the next meeting and go back to middle management and employees to get an answer to report.

-Having conflicting goals- even though each department has conflicting goals, they should still match and be in line with the overall goals of the organization. When there are conflicting goals there becomes issues and more problems because everyone has different views and opinions and then nothing will get accomplished.

Giving the list I provided, I would look at the Professional Organization in which Mintzberg also considers to be bureaucratic in which they rely heavily on trained professionals. This will be helpful to my first item (losing good employees due to standardization) being that they rely heavily on trained professionals they will always need these trained professionals and not rely on machinery to operate. Having bodies there to do the job is always beneficial for several reasons. Another reason is that decision making is decentralized. With this approach, top management would not be making all the decisions and since the workers are specialized in their work, they are able to make confident based on the work they do.
