Almost 55 years into its success story the Wawa business continues to create history. Success is never an accident and extensive planning and superlative management resulted in the creation of a brand which exhibited great ambidexterity in maintaining superlative focus on customer service and satisfaction within the present business while promoting extensive diversification and growth by exploiting opportunities in other areas resulting in successful unbeatable company it is today. The company adopted core values and system which clearly exhibited great leadership create success through imitation and motivation of every involved cadres along with a clear understanding of the need to include in management and respect the employees at every level by involvement in decision making leading to motivated and empowered staff achieving every goal and adapting to every change of the organisation with confidence. The leadership style is extremely dynamic and transformational, resulting in the company having successfully embraced growth and change. The culture is adhocratic resulting in the entire organisation moving towards goals as one composite whole. The company has also exhibited exceptional ethical values by exhibiting accountability and care and empathy with the communities where were they exist. This is clearly visible in the high quality of customer service which has left them to becoming the number one choice for refueling for most people, wherever their services are available. It is a company which was set up on the basis of family values and beliefs and has get these values and beliefs alive even with changing leadership according the required respect to the founders by keeping alive The Legacy. The ability of the company to imitate and replicate entire system across its stores in every geographical location is another major reason for success. The company as built its brand by presenting an image of being socially sensitive and socially responsible company by exhibiting concern and empathy with society and the environment. This has found favour with the consumers leading it to explore fresh territory.
Exxon is a global organisation with an autocratic leadership style which has adapted to transformational leadership through introduction of change necessitated due to its Global presence. However, vestiges of leadership style always remain. The company is undertaken laudable initiatives for environmental protection and conservation of biodiversity. It has introduced innovative solutions embracing energy efficiency and reduction of emissions. However, the various candles which have plagued the organisation, have resulted in tarnishing the image of the company in the eyes of the consumer irreparably. The inability of the leadership to take a stand and respond quickly in Crisis situations such as the oil spill in Alaska along with the scandal regarding the findings from the research and development activities of the company on climate change being misrepresented and hidden from the public to benefit the company clearly exhibited the lack of a strong and focus leadership intent upon building a socially sensitive and responsible organisation. Life many Global organisations the missions and vision statements of the company prove to be the probable attractive cover which serves to take attention away from what maybe bad inside. The customer service provided by the company maybe qualitative but lacks the required warmth which is generated by employees working with an organisation with warmth inside it, where they experience inclusive management and every member is made to feel an important part of the organisation. This leads to employees experiencing responsibility, values and ethics with empathy from the management and leadership within the organisation which they imitate and reflect on to the customers they serve. This becomes difficult Global companies which are more robotic and machine like in their management and treatment of the staff. It becomes very easy for a customer service team which is treated well itself to treat every customer with the same importance and respect that it is accorded within the organisation. Most individuals have reflective personalities.
Many organisations may be successful and Exxon Mobil may be much more successful than Wawa Incorporated but the means and methods employed for achieving the success is what defines the company. This intangible aura of a brand of company is what consumers identify with. Similar to the richest man in the world not being the most loved and respected or even liked individual.
