Explanation / Answer
Social Media and Its Effect on Face-to-Face Conversation
Before delving into the topic how social media is affecting our Social Skills, let me cite an instance that I found on Internet while searching for the topic. The instance though on cover seems humorous but deep underlies a warning.
Rebeca Javaleau, a 15-year old Facebook user, wants to celebrate her Birthday with 15 of her closest friends. She decides to use Facebook to sent the birthday invitation. Thanks to to her virtual networking on Facebook, she ends up in inviting about 20,000 people. Out of all the invitees, 8000 actually RSVP’d on the Birthday Event. And on the day of her Birthday, Rebeca had to undergo into hiding as on that day as more than 1500 guests actually turned up for her Birthday Event. Of these 1500 guests, more than half are not even known to her, personally. To control such a large crowd about 100 Police Persons has to be deployed.
Today our society is emphasizing on the use of Social Media for networking, but what it doesn’t foresee that these Social Media sites are actually taking people away from meaning intercations. These sites hampering on the Face-to-Face conversation as People are gradually forgetting about the mannerism of actual conversation.
Today’s generation spend more and more time on the Social Media sites for Socialising. Now increasing time the People spend on these social media sites, less time they spend on Socializing in Person. Further, communicating through Social Media sites lack the Non-Verbal Communication Signals like Body Language, Facial Expressions, Tone, Voice Quality, etc. Hence, at times it become difficult to understand other Person’s reaction on the communication.
With Social Media communication, we don’t tend to have that Human Touch that we feel when having Face-to-face communication. Hence with Social Media Interactions, it is difficult to build Relationships. Further the studies show that Socila Media Interactions are slowly killing our Face-to-Face communication skills and hindering with our socialising skill. To illustrate this here I am citing an instance. One of my Friend is very vibrant on Social Media. One day he received a request from one of his Facebook friend to meet in person as that other person was visiting the town in which my Friend resides. They decide to meet in a Cafeteria. My Friend told me that when they meet in Cafeteria, after initial greetings, for fifteen minutes both of them just stare at each other as each of them expecting other to speak up. And for the whole 2 Hours that my Friend spend with his Facebook friend, they hardly have a conversation of not more than 15 minutes and that too what they already shared on the Facebook.
The mentioned incidents opened my eyes on the importance of face-to-face conversation over the just Social Media Interactions.
