Explanation / Answer

Ashtosh Jain, with a background in auditing and a degree in MBA is the current CISO of one of the largest private sectors banks in India. The Axis Bank CISO has worked with Barclays, Axa and Bank of America.

Ashutosh explains how his experience in auditing has improved the depth of his understanding of information security. He believes that it is very crucial for an information security officer to have knowledge across different verticals.

One the important jobs of CISO according to Ashutosh is communication. Communicating in simple and understandable English with the people who are not technically strong. It could include board members, other non technical employees, etc.

Communication plays a crucial role also in educating the workforce of the organisation. He states the importance of how everyone in the organisation including the board members must be aware about the technologies. It's important for people to have some connection with information security and it is the job of a CISO to make them aware of the impacts their actions could create on the organisation.  

Ashutosh talks about various threats and security challenges that exist in the financial industry today including ransomware. He describes how important it is for the employees to be aware about such attacks and being extremely careful with sharing their email ids, opening and executing any documents or files, etc. He explains how payment delegate malware is going to be a cause of concern and a big threat in the upcoming year.

He thinks that Ransomware could take much larger shape and form in the upcoming year therefore provides with some very important tips to the organisations and individuals for being careful of ransomware and similar attacks. They are:

1) Be aware. Do not share your email ID and contact details with the public unnecessarily.
2) Do not open any files or email attachments when you are not sure what they are.
3) Endpoint security needs to be installed and respectively used to protect the endpoints.
4) One should have the capability to detect if something goes wrong.
5) One should have the capability to recover as much data as possible if a randomware attacks an institution.  

He also provides his thoughts on various upcoming technological challenges that we might face in the areas of finance and banking. The future of authentication, the trade off between convenience and security, replacement of password based systems, biometric systems, etc are some of the topics Ashutosh touches upon in his interview.
