The details of the episode were kept from employees and clients due to the concern over possible company instability if it was known, even though the CEO was fully in control and able to continue operations. While the president was in the hospital, a nurse recognized him from a community committee they were on together. She off-handedly mentioned seeing him in intensive care to several friends over lunch. One was the president of a bank who had just approved a major investment loan for a new product that was under research and development. A news reporter from the local news station just happened to be sitting at the table next to the nurse, overheard the conversation and rushed to notify his editor of the news. Subsequently, the president’s wife was converged upon leaving the hospital by camera crews wanting to know what happened. She denied any knowledge of a heart attack and stated that he was there only for routine tests and was expected back at work within the week. Attempts were made to gain access to the hospital database for information and several reporters attempted to gain access to the ICU by posing as doctors.
