There are several examples of why/when we should as developers terminate a user's session.

If your application provides access to sensitive data (bank, i.e.) then short session timeouts are critical to minimize the risk of nefarious people accessing your session and accounts if you step away and forget to sign out.

Another example is an upgrade/deployment of your application.   System-wide maintenance often requires you to kill all active sessions.

Some sensitive applications contain fraud detection software that will try to live-detect nefarious activity. Clearly in this case terminating user sessions are criticial.
