Question
A client’s server is rebooted at the end of the work day to run updates on a program that they use. The server POSTS, but then states no operating system found. The server is running a single RAID 5 volume for both the OS and data. You very recently installed and imaging backup solution which backs up to a new USB hard drive, and the backup was successful, however the most recent backup was last night. How would you proceed to troubleshoot the issue while attempting to minimize both downtime and data loss?
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
So here we are talking about RAID 5 which contains the property of hot-swappable, which means even if your drives fail (and eventually they all does) you can change the drive on the server without shutting it down, so in the case of RAID 5 no downtime will be there. Mirroring is also getting done in RAID 5, so there is no question of data getting lost. Although while the process of changing the drive (hot-swap) is going on, the clients system might be active at that point of time maybe several, so the client may notice a lag while this process of troubleshooting is going on.
I hope this helps, if you find any problem. Please comment below. Don't forget to give a thumbs up if you liked it. :)
