Cuba is one of the few remaining counties with a very modest telecommunications
infrastructure. With the thawing of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba in
2015 and 2016, it is anticipated that the telecommunications infrastructures, particularly
internet access will increase tremendously over the next 5 to 10 years.
The purpose of this assignment is to:
1. Determine the status of Cuba's internet access now.
2. Identify how a network infrastructure could be implemented.
3. Provide an implementation plan.
Traceroutes may be used, along with PlanetLab and Alexa (or comparable)
analytics, as well as any other tools available on the web. Be sure to document your
work, so that another experimentalist could replicate your efforts.
An automated script for testing may also be used, which would allow you to run
traces at various times of the day/week.
What to Turn In
When you hand in your assignment, you should include:
• Documentation of the current environment.
• Detailed information about what you found, with IP addresses and the routes used.
•Discussion of any changes in the last 6 months.
• A comparison of the various network load times, using different IP addresses for all over the world. Identify the routes you are using to test.
Presentation of your proposed network infrastructure.
Presentation of an implementation plan. It should be specific, showing the connection(s) to other countries, termination cities in Cuba, redundancy and backup. Estimates should be made of the population which can be support and plans for growth in the coming years.
Maps, graphs, and sources should all be included in your project. Code used for scripting tests should be included, with results clearly identified.
Explanation / Answer
1. Cuban networks have grown substantially since 1992. Today, there are four networks with international connectivity, CENIAL, Tinored, CIGBnet, and InfoMed. CENIAL began networking in 1982. They offer email, database access, mail lists and programming. TinoRed operates 150 walk-in computer centres throughout the nation.
2.
3. Replacing the current low-speed dial-up systems with broadband Internet connections during 2015 and 2016 – and taking these services to at least 50 % (or 1,942,950) homes by 2020 – are two of the noteworthy aims of Cuba’s Ministry of Communications, part of a “National Strategy for the Development of Broad Bandwidth Infrastructure in Cuba. The plans announce that authorities hope to achieve 100% connectivity at all levels of Communist Party entities, all government bodies, banking institutions and mail offices by 2018. By 2020, 80% of commercial entities and 95% of educational and health institutions should enjoy a quality Internet connection.
