Question

Describe the following implications for praxis and provide your own example for each (not from the text): Re-framing Freire: Viewing Deposits as Investments: Freire criticizes traditional educational practices because they turn students into "receptacles" to be "filled" by teachers like making deposits at a bank. However, when an expert offers information or other resources to an oppressed group why can't these resources be viewed as investments in the human potential of the group? Amplifying Discourse of Dignity: Creating, sustaining, and amplifying a discourse of dignity with oppressed groups. Centering Struggle as Necessary to Social Change: Struggle will always be present when the oppressed attempt to engage with social change processes Rather than viewing these struggles as a barrier, they need to be viewed as essential and productive (struggles propel the oppressed to change their lives for the better) Creating Spaces and Opportunities for Dialogue: The oppressed need spaces and opportunities for dialogue so they can discuss their problems and find solutions to them. Introducing Counter Narratives: The oppressed are often so overwhelmed with their lives that they focus almost exclusively on the negative. Those working with the oppressed need to shine a light on the small and significant success stories (counter narratives) that show how social change is possible. Counter narratives have emancipatory potential. Putting the Last First: Those who suffer most should be the focus of social change efforts (e.g., the poorest of the poor, the most oppressed community members).
