* Why would you perform a silent installation?

* Under what circumstances would a system administrator lose access to an instance of SQL Server? Give an example.

* Oracle offers a free download of all editions of the Oracle Database.  How does the company derive benefits from this approach?

Explanation / Answer

1. A silent installation would be performed for the following two reasons:
1.a When the same installation needs to be performed on a multitude of servers. It's not feasible to sit in front of every other computer and perfomr the installation. A silent installation is when the software doesn't throws any prompts for user interaction. You supply a response file and use the '-silent' flag on the command line.
1.b When the installation needs to be performed remotely using the command line. Interactive prompts are not very possible via the command line. Plus, a silent installation is a best practice while installing softwares remotely.

2. The only instance a System Administrator (SA) would lose access to an instance of SQL server is when she might forget / lose the password. The system administrator has the utmost privileges and hence, no access level is above that, which can regain control to an SA account. This can happen is the system administrator had set up a complex password and later forgot it. A host of steps to recover access need to be performed in such a case.

3. Oracle offers a free download of the community editions. The company benefits from this by the following ways:
It allows a wider community access to its database. This allows a wider adoption of Oracle's database. This would imply a much greater user base which is always beneficial to a company as its products increase dependency across the world. An increase in dependency would mean exponentially higher sales as the database is used more and more.
