Cisco is a company that has experimented with organizational structure in the past decade. A structure was created for relying on distinct horizontally linked functional groups. There were different functional groups used along with executive level networks and boards for discovering business opportunities.

It made a transition to matrix structure and sales, engineering groups were linked. There was emphasis on cross functional work.
