Ans1: I was given the charge of organising the annual cultural festival in the final year. The job was very critical as we had only 7 days to go, only 5 resources on hand, all from junior section who were hardly known to me. The preparations were to be completed within 5 days to spare last two days for trial run. I started with organising a meeting of all volunteers, assigning them various tasks right from engaging orchestra to theme designer to the refreshments to the event management company to sending invitations and so on. In all, 22 tasks were identified and timeline as well as priority for each task was determined. Final trial was scheduled on the evening of sixth day, while we decided to meet again on third and fifth day. The team was smart and organised. Two girls finished their work on third day and happily engaged with other tasks to finish it off before schedule.We were ready with our work on sixth day. The event was a success, and praised by all, including the guest of honour.
2. The design team was baffled with daunting task of preparing costume design for 300 different artists. They were asked to do it within five days. It would have been possible only with empowering them to use their imagination to full extent. They were free to go to whatever designer they liked, whatever resources they wanted to consult and whatever raw materials they wanted to use. It was a huge opportunity as well as a learning experience for youngsters straight out of college. They were ready with their designs on time and the work was appreciated by all.
3. The incident was of a capacity building initiative for which I was responsible for program roll out at a rural setting in a developing country, as a project manager. The task was to initiate a livelihood program for rural youth. Initially, we did not have a single enrolment. People had apprehensions and pre occupied thoughts about such programs as they were duped in the past in the name of such schemes by some unscrupulous elements. There were many other issues, accounting for poor interest. The task of counselling and creating awareness was taken by team members. We had to make a decision on the types of courses to be run,the logistical arrangements and the human resources requirements. After deliberations and negotiations with all stakeholders, we were ready with the plan. It was mildly successful in the first year, but was a huge success in the next year.
4. It was a remote tribal region where I was sent to run a handicrafts development and promotion scheme under government. The manpower hugely lacked necessary skills to meet the needs but we had no option. The resources were trained for almost a month in communication, soft skills, technical expertise, general awareness and many other relevant fields. Fortunately, they were very eager to learn and absorb whatever they were taught.When they started off, they had a zeal to succeed. They knew the local culture and people well, this being their biggest advantage. I always included them in decision making and strategical moves. Soon, we had more people, committed to the success of the project. The training and autonomy given to them was never misused by any one of them, rather they used it to learn and implement. We were able to reach the customers in six states on the year one, generating livelihood for many. The motivated team now wants to reach globally and they have really big plans ahead.
