Question

This is the third week of the class. We did spend two weeks in this course, CSC 262. We have two more weeks to go. I would like to ask the class to share your way of learning and studying in CSC 262, so that we can all learn from each other First of all, before the first day of CSC 262: (a) Did you already know Java very well? (b) Were you already very familiar with figuring out the logic to be used to write a program? How have you been learning (more about understanding them here) the concepts and techniques taught in this class? Please describe in more than one sentence. After understanding the material, how have you been trying to be familiar with the material, say, in preparation for an exam? Please describe in more than one sentence. Now, when you take a look back at the Tips for Success that we shared during the first day of class, such as (a) reading everything carefully, (b) following the progress of our course material presentation closely, (c) starting to work on an assignment early AFTER reviewing the material, (d) studying early bit by bit and do not wait till the day before an exam, etc., do you think those tips are useful to help a student in CSC 262 become more efficient in this class, while he/she is trying to fulfill the course requirements, e.g., a homework assignment? Why? Please answer and explain why in more than one sentence. This is an extension to (4): In the HYPOTHETICAL situation of someone TOTALLY IGNORING the resources in this course (e.g., the Java material, the Java demo, and the instructions) and is decided to "learn on one's own, " via reading the textbook on one's own, YouTubing, and Google-ing ALONE, would this be the right approach to do well and to do well efficiently in this course? Yes or No and why? Please answer and explain in more than one sentence. (I am not against going to YouTube and Google for assistance, please do not get me wrong. I do it myself. Here, the issue is using these media ALONE.)

Explanation / Answer

I think this is a feedback kind of questionnaire not a computer science problem. I have done it with my own opinions, feel free to modify/remove to add your own.

1)
1a) Though I was introduced to the concepts of OOPS but I was not well versed with how these concepts are implemented in Java.
1b) Since I had some programming experience in C and C++ and was introduced to various programming paradigms so I can say I am at ease with respect to programming.

2) As was mentioned above, I was introduced to the programming concepts before but during the course of 2 weeks I had the opportunity to revisit the old concepts again and I do feel now that I have a better insight and understanding on how these concepts are applied.

3) To be able to understand the very concepts given in the material and apply them wherever possible gives an understanding of the of how they are to be used and how they should not. This applications of the concepts goes a long way in making one comfortable while preparing for the exams. Since in exams we have enough time to act but not to think, so once concepts are being acted upon in terms of their applications it takes less time to execute them when given the situation.

4) The tips suggested goes a long way to inculcate the very best of habits that one need to have to be good student. Since these habits gives adequate time to oneself so one can better understand the concepts and be able to think through with the problem and come up with better and well formed answers. I personally consider these tips to be healthy and useful for any student anywhere. These are the tips that separate the best form the rest.

5) Since Programming in general and Java in specific in a vast domain, so one needs to understand one concept at a time and when comfortable with it, can go and learn more of it in the future. The thing is its not immersing oneself in knowledge (googling, youtubing etc.) that lead anyone anywhere. Its more of linking each tiny bit of information that one has mastered, really lets one to be an expert.
So I personally don't recommend anyone to be using media alone to learn though it can make you understand better what you sought to learn. But course material is really something that one needs to begin the learning process.
