Question

One nonprofit organization I came across is WomenOnCall. "WomenOnCall is a unique online network created to connect professional women with meaningful causes and relevant skills-based volunteer opportunities with Chicago-area nonprofit organizations and their mission is to tap into the power of women and their professional skills to effect positive change in the Chicago community" (www.womenoncall.org). This organization utilizes the skills of qualified women who volunteer to help other nonprofit organizations complete short term goals as well as help with whatever projects the organization may have. And this not only helps the organizations that need the help, it also helps the women who volunteer with keeping their skills sharp as well they offer their skills 24/7.

A concept that could be beneficial to this organization is a social entrepreneur (p. 412). A Social Entrepreneur is someone who uses business concepts and methods in pursuing a social purpose.  WomenOnCall which was started by Margot Pritzker helps on a social level by connecting professional women with nonprofit organizations that are need of help and assistance.

Another concept that could work with this organization is creative destruction (p. 412). Creative destruction can be described as companies and organizations adhering to old ways decline and disappear, while new companies and industries grow to replace them. Not to say that WomenOnCall and such organizations will replace companies and organizations, but by this being the first time I've heard of an nonprofit organization like this, it's safe to say that this could have very well been an out of box idea that Margot had. Though many organizations can recruit volunteers to staff an event or help with traditional tasks, tight budgets make it difficult for a number of nonprofits to afford profession expertise and assistance on short term assignments. Simultaneously, women are ofter juggling family and work commitments, making it challenging to carve out time to give back despite wanting to help their communities (www.womenoncall.org).

The final concept that could be benefical to WomenOnCall is intrapreneur (p. 414). An intrapreneur's job is to drive creativity and innovation with the organization. These individuals could come up with other ways that WomenOnCall could be of assistance to other nonprofit as well as for profit organizations. WomenOnCall already offer help by virtual volunteering anywhere throughout the country.

WomenOnCall demostrates what it means to give of oneself for the betterment of another person. Hebrews 13:16 speaks to the heart of this organization, "Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God" (ESV) and Philippians 2:4 which says, "Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interest of other" (ESV).

Explanation / Answer

Women On Call, as the case highlights, is a great and unique initiative by the founder “Margot Pritzker” that caters to the fulfilment of meaningful projects and causes and brings positive changes in the Chicago community. Women on Call aims to connect working women by providing them skill-based volunteering opportunities with the non-profit organisations in Chicago. The case also discussed the importance of relevant concepts such as Social Entrepreneur, Creative Destruction and Intrapreneur, all of which may play a key role in the success of Women on Call in its unique endeavour.

The future success of Women on Call also largely depends on its ability to carefully conduct a Need-Gap analysis of the present situation of working women and their aspirations concerning social contributions. So far, Women on Call has been greatly successful at it as it is a win-win situation for both the organisation and women as volunteering enables them to keep their skills sharp and also contribute to the social causes. But at the same time, there are women who are often found juggling between the family and work commitments making it difficult for them to volunteer for the social causes. Women on Call has positioned itself as a platform where professional women can volunteer to make use of their skills in making positive changes in the society. It has always targeted those women who are skilled, have both time and urge to take up some social cause but are presently not able to find an opportunity to fulfil their social entrepreneurship desires.

“One should always work for the betterment of the others” is philosophy that is a key ingredient of women on call’s DNA as an organisation and professional women’s association with it is fruitful for all the stakeholders and is a driving force of the positive impact on Chicago community. Most of the non-profit organisations fail to receive professional expertise owing to their tight budgets but "Women on Call" has made it possible by rightfully encouraging professional women to make a difference in the society by doing what they do best. It has also motivated women to choose a cause that matter to them and impact a world of change. We need more organisations like "Women on Call" who look into the interests of others instead of just fulfiling one's own interests.
