Question
Test Drive: Carbon Footprint Calculator) Some scientists believe that carbon emissions, especially from the burning of fossil fuels, contribute significantly to global warming and that thiscan be combatted if individuals take steps to limit their use of carbon-based fuels. Organizations andindividuals are increasingly concerned about their “carbon footprints.” Websites such as TerraPasswww.terrapass.com/carbon-footprint-calculator/and Carbon Footprintwww.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspxprovide carbon footprint calculators. Test drive these calculators to determine your carbon footprint.Exercises in later chapters will ask you to program your own carbon footprint calculator. Toprepare for this, research the formulas for calculating carbon footprints
Explanation / Answer
I had gone through these calculators and found an approximate of 1.20 metric tonnes as result from myself when I selected a time span of last one year.
To write a program for carbon footprint calculator, we have to consider these aspects and formulas:
1. The calculation method used by Shrink tries to capture the full life cycle of all aspects of our personal consumption.
2. Below are the varius formulas that are defined in order to calculate various results hich defines carbon foot print.
Electricity : use (kWh/yr) * EF (kg CO2e/kWh) = emissions (kg CO2e/yr)
Natural Gas : use (therms/yr) * EF (kg CO2e/therms) = emissions (kg CO2e/yr)
Fuel Oil : use (litres/yr) * EF (kg CO2e/litre) = emissions (kg CO2e/yr)
LPG : use (litres/yr) * EF (kg CO2e/litre) = emissions (kg CO2e/yr)
Waste : use (kg/week) * 52 * EF (kg CO2e/kg) = emissions (kg CO2e/yr)
Water : use (litres/day) * 365 * EF (kg CO2e/kWh) = emissions (kg CO2e/yr)
3. Based upon these calculations and summing upon we get the carbon foot print of individual.
