Question
Three stations A, B and C are attached to a common cable as shown.
The stations are using CSMA/CD. Propagation times (one way) are shown.
a) Draw a space-time diagram with time down vertically, and use it to answer the remaining parts.
b) If A begins transmission at time t, what is the range of times that C might start sending so as to cause a collision? Show the explanation with the aid of the space-time diagram.
c) If C began to send just before the latest point causing collision in the range found in b), what is the largest duration of a frame that A could send to B such that it would all be received without a collision?
d) If A and C are at the extremes of the network and the minimum frame duration was chosen so a collision anywhere would result in a collision everywhere, what must this minimum frame size be?
Explanation / Answer
b)Solution. t-6 to t+6.
c)Solution. 10-2 = 8 milliseconds .
d)Solution. 2*6 = 12 milliseconds
