Question
Do you believe that the meaning of terrorism will change again in the future? What would need to occur in order to change the definition? Explain.
Hypothetical #1- You are discussing military strategies with a friend and he says that the United States practices state-sponsored terrorism by its use of drones (unmanned aerial vehicles). Based on the definitions of terrorism in this chapter, would you agree or disagree? Explain.
Hypothetical #2- Someone you worked with became angry with management because they did not get a raise. The person hacks into the company’s database causing the system to crash. Would you consider this to be an act of terrorism? Explain. Is there a difference in violent groups attacking civilian targets as opposed to military ones? What do you think? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
Hypothetical #1-
Drones have the potential to transform the world for the better. In the UK, the emergency services have started to use them to help people in danger, while the defence industry is exploring how drones can improve security.
Around the world, wildlife conservationists are embracing the technology to monitor animals and any potential threats against them by using drones.
But it has some drawbacks too like --
1.One disadvantage of drones is that they can be considered an invasion of privacy in the sense that they are constantly surveilling. Drones can carry high-power zoom lenses, night vision, and see-through imaging. Many people see drones flying over our homes as spying on us while we conduct our everyday lives.
2.Another disadvantage of drones is that they may cause people to become desensitized to war and killing in general.
3.One last disadvantage of drones is that they leave behind collateral damage. As stated earlier drones have the capability to be used very precisely but that is not always the case. Many civilian casualties have been taken by drones including children.
Conclusion --
No doubt the drones are a good technology to fight crime and terrorism ,infact is the only way to attack where it is not
possible to attack by using human force but it can cause some severe damage to normal person too .hence we should avoid
the attack of drones as much as we can.
Hypothetical #2-
This act is not consider as a terrorism because terrorism is a act in which the person or group of person terrorised and
affect normal people and cause them casualities and thier lifes.
it is simply an act of aggression and can be considered as a crime but not as a terrorism.
I don't think there's a difference in violent groups attacking civilian targets as opposed to military ones because in both the case the innocent person is loosing lifes. The only differnce is that the military ones are capable of standing against them but civilians not.
