Question

Please help discuss how access to care, specifically transportation applies to communities around the world.

The health care administrator is often seen as a pillar of the community. Therefore, it is essential that an administrator be knowledgeable about the infrastructure of the community he or she serves. According to the American College of Healthcare Executives’ (ACHE) Code of Ethics, the health care administrator has a responsibility to the community and society to:

Work to identify and meet the health care needs of the community

Work to support access to health care services for all people

Encourage and participate in public dialogue on health care policy issues and advocate solutions that will improve health status and promote quality health care

Apply short- and long-term assessments to management decisions affecting both community and society

Provide prospective patients and others with adequate and accurate information, enabling them to make enlightened decisions regarding services (American College, 2014)

Based on ACHE’s Code of Ethics, health care administrators consider the impact of the social determinants of health on their communities as they plan initiatives, programs, and policies for their targeted population.

For this Discussion, consider your local community. Select one social determinant of health that you believe applies to your local community and discuss how it affects population health.

By Day 3

Post an analysis of the implications the social determinant (access to care: transportation) on population health outcomes. Then, describe social determinant (access to care: transportation) of population health influences and shapes the present condition and the future course of communities around the world.

Explanation / Answer

There are several types of determinants of health that impacts health care sector. Some of these are genetic, social, behavioral, and environmental factors. Amongst social determinants of health care, one important aspect is that of access to care. As this impacts overall mental, physical and social health of an individual. Access to care broadly includes several aspects such as insurance coverage, health services both availability of treatment and drugs as well as timeliness of care. Under timeliness of care comes transportation. Access to care specifically talking about transportation is a major topic of interest for many researchers. Transportation matters a lot while providing heath care in either emergency cases or to patients who cannot access heath care easily. Timely access to health care is important for achieving best heath outcomes. After analyzing heath care access, talking in terms of transportation as a social determinant of health care for different population around the world it was determined that all the different countries lay equal importance to access to care. Private sectors provide transportation for patients from distant area and charge the patients accordingly. However, talking about public sector in order to provide timely access to care to patients transportation is provided for free, in some cases where patients are distant from hospitals, minimal charges are incurred by transporters. Talking about India, one such public sector transportation service named 108 is provided to citizens across country. It provides necessary preliminary treatment to patients along with transporting patients to desired health care providers. It has been determined that the present condition and the future course of communities around the world is influenced and shaped by social determinant (access to care: transportation) of population health. In my opinion lack of proper transplantation services prevents people from accessing timely health care. However, Getting proper and timely care is a right of every individual. It is unethical practice by some of the private health care players to charge in access for such a noble service. In order to develop communities that are based on ethics and morality, it is extremely important to develop social determinants of heath care access (transportation). It is a topic that every health care provider should lay emphasis on. And try to improve in this field. Even developing countries should learn from developed countries that in case of emergency how the transportation can be improved or moved ahead from roads to air. In providing medical care it is very important to be on the right place on the right time. Many patients cannot afford the transportation and therefore lack in gaining medical benefits at right time. Here there is a scope for service providers to step up and take necessary actions in order to fill in this gap. Developing these transportation services in health care sectors is an important step that should be taken by health care providers for shaping the communities in present and in future.
