Each computer may contain an operating system so that it can either operate independently or in conjunction with other computers. Based on the definition above please provide an example of a system, a system that you may have used before. Please answer the following based on your example: the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database is available for researching vulnerabilities that have been identified and categorized in a system. Use the CVE database to search for your example and identify any recent (within 6 months) vulnerabilities that may exist. Additionally, research the vendor of the system to identify any solutions or fixes that may have been noted for the vulnerability identified. Please list your system and the vulnerabilities discovered for that system. Based on your research, you should also provide some comments on your finding.

Explanation / Answer

A university library system is an example where there are many books, journals etc in the soft-copies. It also has an index of hardcopy books available.

Students can connect their laptops and access the books and the index.

Library provides printing facility so that students can use their library card and print some pages needed to prepare for the exam.

Library also provides scanners so that students can upload their completed thesis in the final year, for the reference of other students.

Library has another building in the nearby area and both are connected by the routers.

There is also wireless connectivity provided in the library.

Vulnarabilities:

1. Student has a malware on the notebook.

2. When student tries to access the available books, reserve some books, the malware affects the library database for certains section and shuts down the system for other students to access the list of the books that are available.

3. Student connects with a notebook that has a virus on it, the server that has online books crashes when this notebook is connected.

4. The student gets a pen drive to scan his thesis, however the pen drive contains spyware and it slows down the network completely. Many students get stuck on the page that they are reading from the digital library and can not move to the next pages.

5. The router that connects to the 2 library buildings, starts sending out packets of data doe to malfunctioning and the route between the 2 buildings results into unpredictable behaviour.

These problems can be avided with the solutions from Symantec, Norton, Trend- Micro etc.

e.g.

Anti-virus products to guard against virus, spyware, malware, phishing

Firewalls

Web-security for servers

E-mail protection software

Network security products

Internet security products

These can help the smooth running of the student library and save the time and content lost due to vulnerabilities and exposures.
