The holding company that owns NDAS has just purchased a regional trucking company called Sunshine Trucking (ST). NDAS believes that ST offers a way to build revenues in an area in which it has experience (package delivery), even though ST will not operate directly with NDAS. ST focuses on large commercial shipments (e.g., food products for wholesalers, packaged goods for department stores). At present, ST has a very poor data communications network. Because you have done such a good job on the NDAS network, President Coone offers your expertise to ST to help with their new network. ST operates three regional shipping hubs: Miami, Dallas, and Atlanta. Each of these regional hubs is responsible for taking shipping requests from customers and scheduling pickups and deliveries. Each regional hub has about four dozen computers are networked to each other using a small LAN and need to be connected onto a WAN. The computers access the network server (a Windows NT file server) and the corporate minicomputer (see below) almost constantly. The current LAN is a 10 Mbps Ethernet that is beginning to become overloaded with the network traffic. The regional hubs communicate with one another fairly regularly via a VPN connection, usually a dozen times an hour. The Atlanta hub also houses the corporate head office and therefore has an additional 20 computers for use by corporate staff. This office also has the corporate minicomputer that processes all accounting data (a UNIX computer). There has been some discussion about establishing a corporate Web site, but no plans have been made. ST has a series of seven local offices for short-term storage, truck maintenance, and managing the local drivers: Houston, New Orleans, J ackson, Birmingham, Tallahassee, Charlotte, and Memphis. Each regional office has 5 to 10 computers that are peer networked together but need to be connected to the WAN. These computers have fairly minimal networking requirements. At present, each local office sends data to the corporate minicomputer at the end of each day by sending one diskette via overnight courier (NDAS). ST would like to automate this process so that it can transmit the data via a network. ST also would like to enable the local offices to communicate with all the regional hubs (and perhaps with one another) but do not anticipate needing to send a large amount of data. Exercises 1. Storage Quality of Service: Network in Server includes storage Quality of Service.Storage QoS enables you to manage storage throughput for virtual hard disks that are accessed by your virtual machines.Server Network introduces the ability to provide Quality of Service for storage. Storage Quality of service gives you the ability to control back I/O-intensive Virtual Machines, making sure that one or two overly active VMs don’t take the greatest share of the host storage subsystems.Storage QoS enables you to specify the maximum and minimum I/O loads in terms of I/O operations per second for each virtual disk in your virtual machines.

Live Migration: Network live migration has been updated to allow the administrator to select the optimal performance options when moving virtual machines to a different server.New Network release also features two ways to achieve live migrations. First, it enables the VM memory and data to be compressed when performing the live migration. This compression can enable up to a 2x performance improvement for live migration.Network administrators can configure the appropriate live migration performance options based on their environment and requirements.

Live VM Export :Network is updated to support exporting a virtual machine or a virtual machine checkpoint while the virtual machine is running. It is no longer need to shut down a virtual machine before exporting.The new Network also provides the ability to perform live exports of running VMs. This feature can help you more easily clone and move VMs. The export process takes a snapshot of the VM’s current state.Exporting a virtual machine while the virtual machine is running allows the administrator to export the virtual machine without incurring any downtime.The Export option is now available as an action for a running virtual machine from Network Manager.

After a planned or unplanned failover from the primary server to the Replica server, the extended Replica server provides further business continuity protection. As with ordinary replication, you configure extended replication by using Network Manager. Network Replica is one of the most popular features in Server . With Server Network, you can now replicate a target VM that has been replicated from another Network instance. This allows a hosting company that might be acting as a Network Replica target to back up or replicate the VM for redundancy. Addition to these Server Network lets you control the interval by which the replication logs are sent from the source to the replica target.The frequency of replication, which previously was a fixed value, is now configurable. You can also access recovery points for 24 hours.
