Explanation / Answer
The company which I will choose for my portfolio project is Starbucks. It is a chain of coffee house with their origin from United States having its presence all over the world. Company core value and commitment is to provide best quality of coffee all over the world. With their beginning of single store over forty two years ago they had tried to make the place better and best with each and every location they have covered till date. Currently they are having near about 20,000 stores situated in 62 countries all around the world.
At store of starbucks both hot and cold beverages are offered to the customers made from tea and coffee, not only this but various other products are there in menu list like pastries, snacks, hot and cold sandwiches and even items such as mugs and tumblers are also offered. Some authorized locations also sell beers and wines in the evening hours. The range of products keeps changing as per the season and location of the store. Starbucks-brand different flavours ice cream and coffee are also sold at many grocery stores all over the world.
As per the current data company is having near about 1,51,000 permanent on board employees and it has also achieve 7 % growth in global comparable stores sales as well as in revenue from 1700 newly open stores in the duration of past twelve months. Both companies operating income as well as operating margins has shown tremendous growth. As per the CEO of starbucks Howard Schultz 2013 forth quarter has shown the best growth in the history of the company and he believe that all this has happen due to the ongoing efforts, discipline and values of starbucks which has always helped in strengthening its relationship with its customers and communities all around the world.
Knowledge Management is an approach which helps to achieve organisational objectives by making the best use of knowledge. For successful implementation of knowledge management program instead of managing it solely I would share with personnel of my organisation who will not only help me to assist this project but will also put his valuable suggestions as and when required. Implementing a KM plan is not an easy process there are many huddles which will come and handling them individually is not an easy task. As it may happen many times that inability in recognising the knowledge can turn into explicit knowledge, as starbucks employees are distributed all over the world so there may come many geographical, cultural and language barriers. Even internal conflicts may occur in initial stage.
The research and development area of starbucks required Implementation of knowledge management. Since the company is having global presence so R &D should be considered in order to be successful in any country. Another area which required attention is coffee quality assurance. Although company is providing best quality of coffee from its origin but with increasing competition it is required more focus. Even demand of organic products has gain importance and slowly its demand will going to increase in all over the world. And the third area is product development so that more varieties can be added on timely basis to the products offered by company and with the implementation of knowledge management innovative products can be made available on stores on the basis of customer expectation and demand.
There are many ideas and thoughts of McElroy’s which can be used to focus on my project .First is that McElroy’s Model has divided KM into two processes
Knowledge production – In this process new organisational knowledge is created and it helps in organisational learning. It can be formed by Individual Group Learning, Knowledge Claim, Information Acquisition, Codified Knowledge Claim, and Knowledge Claim Evaluation.
Second process is Knowledge Integration – here some activities are formed which helps in knowledge sharing and distribution. It basically includes knowledge Broad-casting, Searching, teaching, Sharing and organising various other social activities
Secondly there are two new concepts of McElroy’s model.
Supply side –it helps to enhance the supply of existing knowledge to or from workers in an organization.
While Demand-side focuses more on supply of existing knowledge to a workforce it helps an organisation to satisfy the demand of new knowledge.
