Question
For this component, you will discuss verification and validation of your designs. You will define best practices for verification and validation and support your discussion through example.
Define verification and validation and discuss the goals of these processes.
Discuss steps taken to verify and validate designs. Support your discussion through example. You will provide a walk-through of the use cases or functional model that you designed last week. Verify and validate this model, describing the steps along the way.
Answer the following questions: What steps did you take to verify and validate your functional model from last week?
What changes did you make and how did this improve your model?
How does this verification and validation process differ for structural and behavior models?
What is your plan for ensuring the validity of your models as you continue through the design process?
Your completed assignment should include the following:
Describe the basic fundamental concepts of software verification and validation.
Demonstrate the ability to verify and validate models of use case designs for the chosen subsystem.
Analyze the importance and impact that software verification and validation have on the systems development life cycle.

Explanation / Answer
Define verification and validation and discuss the goals of these processes.
Verification and validation (V&V) is the process of checking that a software system meets specifications and that it fulfills its intended purpose. It may also be referred to as software quality control.
The goals of Verification and validation processes :
What steps did you take to verify and validate your functional model from last week?
Steps in model verification and validation that has been widely followed :
Verification of models:
Step 1. Have the code checked by someone other than the programmer.
Step 2. Make a flow diagram which includes each logically possible action a system can take when an event occurs, and follow the model logic for each action for each event type.
Step 3. Closely examine the model output for reasonableness under a variety of settings of the input parameters. Have the code print out a wide variety of output statistics.
Step 4. Have the computerized model print the input parameters at the end of the simulation, to be sure that these parameter values have not been changed inadvertently.
Step 5. Make the computer code as self-documenting as possible. Give a precise definition of every variable used, and a general description of the purpose of each major section of code.
Validation of models:
Step 1. Build a model that has high face validity.
Step 2. Validate model assumptions.
Step 3. Compare the model input-output transformations to corresponding input-output transformations for the real system.
Analyze the importance and impact that software verification and validation have on the systems development life cycle.
Verification and validation is concerned with establishing the existence of defects in a program. One of the main aim of SDLC in testing phase is for verification and validation. Testing is a phase that can serve as metric as it is used heavily in V&V method. Based on the result, you can come out with the comparison between qualities amongst different products.
