Question

Assume you have recently been hired as a DBA for a hospital. The CIO has requested you to lead your first database project. Describe in detail the process you will follow to complete your database assignment. What resources would you need? In your answer make sure you show your understanding of the database development life cycle, ERD, relational model, physical design, normalization, transaction management and concurrency control, view design and integration, and database administration and security. Produce a report that shows the list of all the students with their assigned ranks.

Explanation / Answer

As a database administrator for the Hospitel, inorder to design the database for the hospitel first I need to know the complete information of hospitel about the departments, treatments and other services providing by hospitel, what data will be stored and how to store, like this the complete inflow and ouflow of evert entity in the hospitel.

The first thing is design a development life cycle of the database setup which means the process to follow what to do and what might be required and the stages of the database setup will be shown in this developement lifecycle. Which means the complete flow from scratch to the final desing of the database.

Then the next thing is to create ERD means entity relationship diagram with all the entities and its attributes involving in the hospital inorder to setup how the data will be stored and what data will comes under which entity like this . This is the initial phase of database design after setting up the database. This ERD shows the complete flow of information in a graphical way inorder to easily identify the data.

Then next step is to create relational model from the erdiagam. This involves a set of rules about how to convert the erdiagram to the table form in the database. The relational model is nothing but the strucutre of the tables need to be in the database.

creating tables from the ERD is not enough. Inorder to create and store the data in the database. This involves another process known as normalisation. The table structures directly created from the ERD contains many anamolies. This causes the data redundency and inaccuracy. To overcome that we are having normalisation techniques. By followind this normaisation standards we convert these table structures into normaised table structures by removing anomalies and adding specific constraints.

Then finally we go with the physical design in the database by creating this normalised table structures. So that after creating all these tables we can add data to these tables and also we can retrieve and can do many operations over this data.
