Question
A painter comes up with a new business idea: He wants to offer custom paintings
from photos. Both the photos and paintings will be transmitted in digital form
via the Internet. One concern that he has is discretion towards his customers, since
potentially embarrassing photos, e.g., nude photos, might be sent to him. Hence,
the photo data should not be accessible for third parties during transmission. The
painter needs multiple weeks for the creation of a painting, and hence he wants to
assure that he cannot be fooled by someone who sends in a photo assuming a false
name. He also wants to be assured that the painting will definitely be accepted by
the customer and that she cannot deny the order.
1. Choose the necessary security services for the transmission of the digitalized
photos from the customers to the painter.
2. Which cryptographic elements (e.g., symmetric encryption) can be utilized to
achieve the security services? Assume that several megabytes of data have to be
transmitted for every photo.
Explanation / Answer
1) Following is list of necessary security services for the transmission of the digitalized
photos from the customers to the painter.
a) Encryption : We can use encryption technique to secure data send across network,
it allows us to securely protect data from third parties and will be accessed by those
only having key/ mechanism for decryption.
b) Digital Signature : We can digitally sign the data so, that is some one has successfully accessed
the data, then he/she can't deny, as data can only be accessed by legitimate owners.
c) data transmission over ssl/tsl https
2) cryptographic elements.
An obvious choice for strong encryption is Asymmetric encrytion,
since we have to transmit lot of data, processing will take lot of time.
A better choice will be use of Asymmetric encrytion for key exchange and
symmetric encryption for encrypting data. This process will be faster and
data will be secured.
