In your opinion, explain the three most important factors that make cloud-based hosting preferable to in-house hosting. Apple invested more than $1 billion in the North Carolina data center shown in Figure 6-2. For Apple to spend such a sum, it must perceive the iCloud as being a key component of its future. Using the principles listed in Figure 3-2 (page 54), explain all the ways that you believe the iCloud will give Apple a competitive advantage over other mobile device vendors. Suppose that you work at AllRoad Parts you that she doesn't believe that cheap, elastic of servers is possible. "There has to be a catch somewhere, " she says. Explanation / Answer

Answer for 6-1:

Cloud computing is defined as a type of Internet based computing that is used to provide the shared processing resources and information to different computers on demand. The method of cloud computing relies on the sharing of the resources in order to achieve the coherent service and economy of sale.

Factors that make cloud based hosting preferable over in house hosting:

1. In-House Hosting requires a large capital investment in infrastructure and other Hardware wheres as there is no need of onsite capital investment in case of cloud based hosting.
2. In- House Hosting requires a pre defined space in your work area for a server and as well as IT support which is not the case with cloud based hosting.
3. In -House Hosting are more prone to data loss during a mishap but in the case of cloud data backup can be made as regularly as possible.

Answer for 6-2:

The iCloud used by Apple will definitely give a high competition to other mobile device vendors as this is entirely a new service which wont cost muc to the customers and hence will draw in more number of customers in their arena. Apple is trying hard to create alliances using its iCloud services with other good organizations in order to create more competition in the market. It is trying hard to make iCloud services far better than any other service in the market so as to attract the customers and make them stay with apple. The iCloud service enabled the customers to store their information at one place and then access it from any where instead of having the entire data placed at a specified one location. iCloud can only be accessed from Apple devices /products so whatever data is being stored by the customers on the iCloud can only be opened using Apple products which makes it hard for them to switch to different mobile device vendor as they need an Apple product always to access their iCloud data.

Answer for 6-3:

Cloud services have a network layer so as to connect users end point devices which are computers/smartphones to the resources such as a centralised data center. The data center can be accessed by the users by Internet or via a company network. The data from the cloud can be accessed from anywhere which allows the customers to use or access their data on demand.
